About this route
The nonstop between JFK and Changi is one of the longest scheduled flights operating anywhere, a little over 18 hours in the air depending on the winds. Singapore Airlines runs it, and there is one thing worth knowing before you start comparing fares: the aircraft on this route carries business and premium economy only. There is no economy cabin. If economy is the budget, you are connecting somewhere, and that is a perfectly good way to fly it. Better to know now than at checkout.
Nonstop, or one stop
A single stop usually puts you somewhere between 21 and 26 hours door to door. The sensible connecting points are the Gulf, through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or East Asia through Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong or Taipei. Europe works as well, though routing that way adds more time than most people expect. The Gulf carriers are usually the value play, and the overnight-to-overnight timing means you sleep on both legs instead of landing mid-afternoon with nothing to do.
JFK or Newark
Singapore Airlines flies the same ultra-long-haul out of Newark too. If you are in New Jersey, Westchester, or anywhere west of Manhattan, EWR is often the shorter trip to the airport and the fare is frequently within a few dollars either way. We look at both and tell you which is actually cheaper on your dates, not which one is closer.
The day you lose
Singapore sits 12 or 13 hours ahead of New York depending on the time of year, because Singapore does not change its clocks and we do. Leave JFK in the evening and you land at Changi two calendar days later. You get the day back on the return. Worth building into hotel nights and anything scheduled on the far side, because people routinely pay for a night they never sleep in.
Choosing a cabin at 18 hours
On a short hop the cabin is about comfort. At eighteen hours it decides what you are capable of the day you land. Premium economy on this aircraft is a real step up rather than a slightly wider seat, and business is close to the only way to arrive ready to work.
